cold brew

Cold brewing yields a super smooth, utterly tasty coffee concentrate. While most shortcuts sacrifice quality, the toddy maker lets you have your cake and eat it too. Follow these 6 easy steps for how to make a cold press that yields a delicious coffee concentrate ready to mix up hot or cold coffee drinks at a moment’s notice (be sure to check out our recipes below). This brew guide is for one batch of cold press concentrate, which calls for 12 oz of coffee and 56 fl oz (7 cups) of water.

things you'll want:

  • A toddy coffee maker
  • Yeti Cold Press Coffee

things you’ll want

  • A scale
  • A quality burr grinder
  • Foresight to anticipate cold press needs 8-12 hours in advance

Step 1: prep toddy maker

  • Insert the stopper into the bottom of the brewing container from below
  • Wet the felt filter and insert it into the bottom of the brewing container from inside

Step 2: grind coffee

  • Measure and grind your coffee
  • Grind the coffee extra coarse, into granules that are like gritty polenta

For 1 lb of coffee, the instructions remain the same, simply substitute 72 fl oz (9 cups) of water

Step 3: add water

  • Add 7 cups of water and the 12 oz bag of Yeti Cold Press to the container by halves
  • Allow the coffee to bloom after each addition
  • DO NOT STIR (stirring the bed of grounds can result in a clogged filter)
  • Lightly press down on the topmost grounds with the back of a spoon to ensure all grounds get wet

Pro tip

Fresh coffee contains CO2 gas. This step releases that gas, ensuring more even brewing. It also provides a reliable indicator of the freshness of your coffee: No bubbling bloom when the water is added means that your coffee has already started to lose some of its fresh flavors—time to buy more beans!

Step 4: steep

  • Steep your coffee grounds for 8 to 12 hours to create a smooth, rich flavor

Step 5: decant and serve

  • Remove the stopper and let your coffee concentrate flow into the glass decanter
  • The concentrate will stay fresh for up to 2 weeks in your refrigerator
  • We recommend starting with a ratio of 1 part coffee concentrate to 1 part water, milk or soy
  • Mix to taste, making your coffee as strong or as weak as you prefer
  • For rich, smooth iced coffee, simply pour coffee concentrate and water, milk or soy over ice
  • Combine coffee concentrate with steaming hot water for a bolder, gentler cup of hot coffee
