We all have one and, over the life of our kitchens, probably tried many more. The drip coffee brewers that call our countertops home have become one of the most essential parts of our family gathering spaces. And while the brewers we find at local department stores certainly do the job of passing water through coffee grounds to make brewed coffee, technology has given us the ability to make exceptional-quality brewed coffee at home with minimal investment.
In recent years, coffee professionals have discovered that entry-level drip coffee makers do a couple of key things wrong. While the basic idea is sound, these brewers don't sweat the details. Most notably, in an effort to keep costs low, manufacturers use a low-power heating element which does not get the water to an optimal temperature (Peace Coffee recommends 195° - 205ºF. Most drip brewers can only get the water to ~180°F), and their single-spouted sprayers do not evenly wet the grounds.
