Peace Coffee celebrated its 20th anniversary in style at the Great Minnesota Get-Together this year. We spent the waning months of summer plotting and planning how we could increase our presence and visibility inside the Health Local Foods Area, put together by our friends at Renewing The Countryside.
We put our collective heads together and dove deep into just what makes our state so great, and how our 20-year history of advocating for small-scale farmers and organic farming practices could intertwine with a yearly gathering of nearly 2 million people. Our thoughts turned to a concept piece of artwork done by our longtime friend, Adam Turman. The legend of Paul Bunyan and Babe the Blue Ox are as Minnesotan as hotdish on a stick and Sweet Martha’s cookies. And what could be better than the larger-than-life characters helping us #RaiseAMug to 20 years of Peace Coffee?
We worked with local creative design company Art-Tech Productions to create a more interactive, bold area for us at the fair this year and we were so pleased with the results! They created a photo op out of the Paul Bunyan and Babe art, with head holes cut out so that fairgoers could pose as either character. They also conspired to create a booth structure where coffee samples could be served from within a branded stand that made us easy to find inside the Eco Experience.
Our Minnesota State Fair hours in the Healthy Local Foods Area expanded as well to our booth being open from 9am-3pm every single day of the fair. Longer hours and our shiny new exhibit allowed us to sample our coffee to nearly 30,000 people throughout the course of the fair. We brought our most Minnesotan themed coffees to the party, sampling Twin Cities Blend and Blue Ox Blend equally during the 12 days.
We did our best to take in all that the streets outside of our building had to offer as well, with new delicacies like Paneer on a Spear from Hot Indian Foods, the Reuben Pickle Dog, Cheesy French Onion Monkey Bread at the Blue Moon Dine-in Theater and Chocolate Agate Crunch from Izzy’s Ice Cream at the Hamline Dining Hall. And we did our due diligence on our state’s favorite beverage, beer! We enjoyed the Great MN Sweat Together from Bent Brewstillery, the Phresh from Modist Brewing and the Minnesota Mule Cider from Sweetland Orchards.
This year’s Minnesota State Fair was graced with kind, warm Minnesota afternoons that brought out nearly 2 million (1,943,719 to be exact) people over the 12 days, breaking the previous attendance record by 100,000+! We cherish the opportunity we have to be part of the fair in such a unique way. The Eco Experience and our spot inside the Healthy Local Foods Area go a long way to in helping educate the masses about sustainable choices, renewable energy and the power of slow, local food that honors the earth it came from. We appreciated an opportunity to speak with local food maven Dara Moskowitz-Grumdahl on her WCCO morning radio show, Off the Menu. Check out the episode here, taped live from the fairgrounds on August 27th. We are so grateful to friends new and old that stopped by to say hello and learn about our mission and where to find our coffee around the great state of Minnesota!
