World Fair Trade Day: Connections and Community
Friday, May 13, 2016
At the heart of our mission is our connection to the communities that support us, both here at home and around the world. This Saturday May 14th, people around the globe are highlighting those connections by celebrating World Fair Trade Day.
Fundamentally, the fair trade movement believes that we can transform the global economy through the purchases we make. Fair Trade works to benefit small-scale farmers, who are amongst the most marginalised groups globally, through trade rather than aid. It is a call for better prices, decent working conditions, local sustainability, and fair terms of trade for farmers and workers in the developing world. While our focus is on coffee, there are companies who share our commitment to creating fairer supply chains selling everything from bananas to tea, and cereal to soap. We raise a mug to them, and to the all the fair trade heroes, producers and artisans around the world who work hard to make the products on which we depend.
Please join us in the world's largest (we hope!) fair trade coffee break starting today through Sunday. Sign up here and invite others to enjoy a cup with you. To see more activities planned in see this calendar put together by the World Fair Trade Organization.
