Halva nice summer
Wednesday, June 1, 2016
No matter how many years it has been since your calendar counted off the semesters, there's always something about this time of year that gets the refrain “School's out for the Summer” running through our heads. It's the season of road trips, of patios, of lake cabins, and adventures. This year's Summer drink menu is inspired by that spirit of adventure, as interpreted by our barista team.
Black Lemonade Brûlée (BLB)
Our Director of Drinkable Hospitality came up with the ultimate adult answer to the lemonade stand: the Black Lemonade Brûlée. Caramelize some sugar, add some cold press, cook it all down to a dark, delicious syrup, and add to fresh-squeezed lemonade and sparkling water. Voila, sophistication meets innocence, cold press meets lemonade, and live happily ever after. Just don't caffeinate the kids.
Maybe it's the hot humid weather, but Thai food always seems like the perfect pairing with summer. You're probably familiar with Thai iced tea, that decadent, sweet, orange treat. Inspired by stacks of guidebooks, reading up on street food and traditional recipes, and maybe some takeout, our barista Andrea concocted the Cha Yen: Rishi Tea's exceptional black iced tea recipe blended with star anise, cardamom, and cloves, then sweetened with a shot of vanilla syrup. Add a little milk and a touch of turmeric for a drink that's creamy and delicious.
Halva Nice Day
This drink draws its inspiration from the pastry case, and our love of puns. Imagine the shakerato, an Italian concoction of espresso shaken with ice and sugar. Then imagine halva, specifically its Ukrainian incarnation, rich and sweet with sunflower seeds. Then imagine them together, the sunflower seeds crushed with sugar, and a splash of half-and-half to make it all creamy and delicious. And then, well, have a nice day. But with halva. (Trust our barista Phil, it all makes sense after a few shots of espresso.)
