Jackson O’Brien

Coffee Ambassador

Jackson has been working in coffee for the last 18 years. He’s trained baristas all across the Western Hemisphere, from the North Woods of Minnesota to the rainforests of rural Peru. He has been a competitor and a judge for US Coffee Championships for the past 8 years, meeting and learning from the best the industry has to offer in competitions in Minneapolis, Nashville, Atlanta, Austin, Kansas City, and Orange County, and most recently in Boston. He can’t wait for it to be safe to share beverages and space with people so he can do it all over again.

What’s your favorite pairing with coffee?
  • Light and bright coffee, croissant.
  • If it’s a thick and syrupy coffee, scrambled eggs and bacon.
What do you do when you’re not making coffee professionally?

Many things potentially. Drinking beer, cooking, finding new and interesting foods to eat, listening to socially irresponsible metal and/or rap music, finding the newest cat videos on the internet, going on adventures with my wife, playing music with my friends or family, or playing croquet.

What is your favorite Peace Coffee brew & why?

At the moment, it’s Nocturnal Seasonal Blend, it is in season and comprised of all the best we have to offer at this given moment, but there are new and exciting coffees that have yet to reach our warehouse that I can’t wait to taste.

What’s your favorite drink to make as a barista & why?

Classic standard cappuccino. I love the timeless classics: Margherita Pizzas, Gin Martinis, Little Black Dresses, Torch Songs, etc., and I love the chance to work on my take on a classic.

If you could travel anywhere in the world where would you want to go and why?

I’ll go anywhere I haven’t been before, so long as there’s good food, beer, coffee, and something weird there.

What is the best meal you’ve ever eaten & why?

There’s no single best meal, but there have been many perfect storms of anticipation, cultural significance, and execution that rendered amazing meals. Tacos in The Mission in San Francisco, Pizza under the Brooklyn Bridge, Hot Chicken in Nashville, Boxboles in Guatemala all come to mind.

What’s your favorite fact about coffee?

Coffee has —in every culture it has touched— been the focal point of the gathering of free thinkers and intellectual discussions. Coffee houses were where scientists and mathematicians in the Arabian Empire advanced human knowledge while Europe was stuck in the dark ages. The Viennese brought coffee to Italy just in time for the Renaissance. British coffee houses were where Harvey advanced anatomy and Newton advanced physics, while in France coffee houses were where Voltaire and Rousseau debated their theories of the liberty of mankind. Right now I bet you there are people in a coffee shop in China talking about the finer points of improving workers rights, and people in Brazil talking over coffee about how to solve the question of peak oil (and of course in Minneapolis, one of our customers and I are probably debating the finer points of Batman, but that hardly counts).

How do we know when you have control of the music at an event?

If the music could be described as “AM Gold”, “Uplifting Trance” or “Outlaw Country”, it’s probably mine.

What’s your dream job if you weren’t working at Peace Coffee?

I’d want Bosco Mann’s job.

If you could have coffee with anyone, living or dead, who would it be?

Bill Murray. Even if the conversation were awkward, he’d make it memorably awkward.
