Shout
out to Brooklyn!

New
York City was a hot and sticky place to spend my
vacation last week. But I managed to survive what
may be one of the warmest summers in Big Apple
history by drinking iced coffee in the morning and
cold beer at night.
Every
corner bodega had ice coffee available, as did
every specialty coffee shop on the block. I was
never without a cool caffeinated beverage to keep
me going on my long days out and about visiting
museums and shops all over the city. But it wasn't
the coffee that will keep me coming back to NYC --
it was the beer.
It
just so happens that my friends live near a liquor
store that offers a free beer and cheese tasting
every Tuesday night. At the beer tasting, I got my
fair share of hefeweizen, the German style of
wheat beer, of which interestingly enough I had
never been much of a fan. It was there that I
tried Brooklyn Brewery's Brooklyner Weisse. And
boy, oh boy, was it good! In fact it is so good
that is was recently rated by the New York
Times as the top tasting hefeweizen on the
market. They described its aroma as that of clove,
banana and smoke. For me, the liveliness of this
beer was heightened as I drank it in a crowded
sports bar while watching the World Cup final
between France and Italy. The place was packed
with people drinking beers from all over the
world. There I was content on my bar stool
drinking the best local beer while watching the
biggest international sporting event in the world.
I
hope this small snapshot of a perfect moment on my
trip to NYC will remind you of times when you’ve
had the perfect cup of coffee or the best tasting
pint of beer that was as much about the place as
it was about the taste!
