by Meagan O'Brien, Production Roaster

"I come here every year to renew my hope," said one man who stopped by our fragrant, burlap draped booth to sample some Ethiopian coffee. I smiled broadly because I knew exactly what he meant. Although this was my first trip to LaCrosse's Midwest Organic and Sustainable Agriculture Conference (known as MOSES), I have been involved in the sustainable agriculture movement for a few years now.

It all started so innocently, one bright and blistering summer day as I lingered in the produce department's frigid air conditioning. I was gazing absently-mindly at a display of brilliant watermelon slices, all dewy and delicious-looking in their individual, cellophane packages resting neatly on crushed ice. But then, from nowhere tangible, my world nearly split open when I realized I had no idea where those watermelons came from. Did they grow in a tree? Underwater? Shoot up like pineapples from the heart of a spiny plant? I was in my early 20s and I couldn't tell you where this summer delicacy grows, this wondrous and refreshing fruit that I have eaten every summer of my entire life.

Have you ever been curious about how we do things at Peace Coffee? Want to meet the good folks behind our products? Take our video tour! You'll meet Lee, our executive director, roasters Keith and Derek and events and outreach coordinator Liz. You'll also get to tag along on a bike delivery run with Andrew and visit Ethiopia with Derek. What more could you want (except a cup of Peace Coffee, of course)!

You can watch this truly wonderful video on our website. Or watch on YouTube, where you can comment on it or post a video response of your own.

The video was generously made by local filmmakers Gabe and Jacob of 612Authentic. Big thanks to the Twin Cities band Pert Near Sandstone for allowing us to use their music in the film.

Writer and activist Jim Hightower has included Peace Coffee in his new book Swim Against the Current: Even a Dead Fish Can Go With the Flow. The chapter titled "Fair Trade" highlights the Institute for Agriculture and Trade Policy's creation of Peace Coffee, and our involvement in Fair Trade over the past 10 years. His book also features the Minnesota organization Wellstone Action!, Wisconsin-based company Organic Valley and many more great organizations who've figured out new ways to do commerce, ways to create political channels that empower grassroots Americans and ways to live their lives.

Please join Peace Coffee, Wellstone Action & the Institute for Agriculture and Trade Policy for an evening with Jim Hightower. MN Secretary of State Mark Ritchie will introduce Jim followed by an auction of Jim's famous white cowboy hat and organic treats and Peace Coffee provided by Common Roots Cafe.

Event details:
Jim Hightower Live
Thursday April 3rd, 2008, 6:30-8:30 PM

Sadly, we didn't have any winners in our crossword puzzle contest... but we did get these great photos of the staff of the Minneapolis-based Sexual Violence Center enjoying their monthly donation of two pounds of coffee. They also sent us an inspiring letter about how Peace Coffee benefits them and their clients:

"The Sexual Violence Center is open 8 am to 8 pm M-F. Some days volunteers go out and meet a victim at the hospital and spend hours with their client though the evidentiary exam and then come back to the office to fill out paperwork and count on some Peace Coffee to get them through their shift. Other staff answers the crisis line all day, go out to schools to present lessons on sexual violence to youth and work with clients and couldn't make through their day without a cup of Peace Coffee. The coffee also comforts some of their clients that come in to meet with their counselors. Whatever the situation, Peace Coffee is there for us; thank you for caffeinating the Sexual Violence Center."

If you're passionate about Peace Coffee, show it! Send us:

-- a photo showing your "Peace Coffee Pride”

-- a short written testimonial about how much you love us

-- an original coffee poem or haiku (three lines, 5 syllables in the first, 7 in the second, 5 in the last)

Each month, we’ll choose one entry to appear in the following Fair Grounds newsletter. If we choose yours, you’ll win a pound of your favorite Peace Coffee coffee. Please send your entry to mel@peacecoffee.com.

Contest ends: April 11
