Sure,
the temps may be dropping and the Midwestern wind
chill is making the air seem even colder, but
that's no reason to hide out. It's the holiday
season -- go out, see your friends, enjoy the
festivities. But if you do find the lure of the
inside just too alluring to pass up, pour yourself
a mug of Peace Coffee and settle in with a good
book or your favorite CD. Or take in one of the wintertime
survival ideas in this issue of Fair
Grounds. Also in this issue, we've got a piece
on the push by dedicated MPIRG
members and U of MN students to make the
University 100% Fair Trade. And yetis
surface... yet again. All this plus a recipe for Scottish
Shortbread, which goes perfectly with our new Blue
Ox Blend coffee (see Keith's Roaster's
Corner), and a new Peace Pride
photo are wrapped up in one stimulating holiday
issue... so enjoy!

Students
Attempt to Make Fair Trade Coffee a Requirement at all
University of Minnesota Campuses
Since
the beginning of the fall semester, Peace Coffee has
joined the student group MPIRG (Minnesota Public Interest
Research Group) educating students and faculty at the
University of Minnesota about the benefits of Fair Trade
by tabling at various events, offering samples on campus
and hosting screenings of Black Gold. The students
we've worked with have been amazing. Their dedication to
Fair Trade and social justice is relentless.
For
years, University of MN students on the Twin Cities campus
have been working hard to achieve what some smaller
colleges have already accomplished: a campus where all of
the coffee for sale and consumption is 100% Fair Trade. On
Thursday, Nov 29, MPIRG's Fair Trade Task force
successfully passed the following resolution through the U
of M TC's student senate:
That
the U of M requires that in all the food service contracts
it signs into with food service providers that all coffee
sold on its campus' (Twin Cities, Morris, Duluth and
Crookston) must be 100% Fair Trade Certified including all
coffee retail locations, catering operations, and
residence halls; and that whenever possible, this coffee
be organic, shade grown, and purchased from a local
roaster.

Winter
in Minnesota can be a trying time for most people.
The snow and cold make leaving home a chore.
Hibernation often seems like the best option,
except when there are fun things to see and do
around town. Fortunately, this winter there is no
shortage of events to motivate folks to leave
their den.
In
fact, Peace Coffee is the proud sponsor of two
"winter fun" activities:
1)
Catch the action at the North Star Roller Girl
bouts (NSRG).
NSRG is 100% female skater owned and operated and
plays by the Women's Flat Track Derby Association
(WFTDA) rules. The North Star Roller Girls League
is comprised of four teams: The Banger Sisters,
Violent Femmes, and Delta Delta Di, and The
Kilmore Girls. The teams each play two 20-minute
periods, while half time features local bands and
artists. In real life, these skaters' occupations
encompass everything from schoolteacher, artist,
graphic designer, waitress, mom, techie, and
beyond -- but all of them possess alter egos
thirsting for speed, physical competition and
victory! Our events and outreach coordinator Liz
Wawrzonek checked out the November bout and had a
blast. She recommends the trackside seating if you
want to get real up close and personal with the
skaters. Just be careful or you might get a skate
in your face!
Future Bouts:
January 12th, 2008 – Mpls Convention Center Hall
D
February 23rd, 2008 - Mpls Convention Center Hall
D
March 29th, 2008 - Mpls Convention Center Hall
A
April 26th, 2008 - Mpls Convention Center Hall
C
May 17th, 2008 - Mpls Convention Center Hall D
For
tickets and more info go to www.northstarrollergirls.com
2)
Enjoy some live theater
Our second recommendation for kicking the
wintertime blues is to see the Guthrie Theatre's
rendition of the 1867 play Peer Gynt,
originally written by Norwegian playwright Henrik
Ibsen. This charming fantasy play captures the
misadventures of the charismatic Peer Gynt on a
journey to find his place in the world. Guthrie
has commissioned a new translation of the play by
prolific poet and Minnesota native Robert Bly. It
promises to be bold, raucous and satirically
funny. We've also been told it is a very long play
which means a cup of Peace Coffee (which they
exclusively serve at the Guthrie) will come in
handy during intermission. Stay caffeinated and
enjoy the performance.
The
play opens January 18 and runs through March 02,
2008. For ticket information and to watch a behind
the scenes clip, go to: www.guthrietheater.org/

Last
month msnbc.com reported that in Katmandu, Nepal,
members of a TV production team investigating the
existence of the legendary Yeti in Nepal found
footprints intriguing enough to merit further
investigation.
The
team of nine producers from "Destination
Truth," armed with infrared cameras, spent a
week in the icy Khumbu region where Mount Everest
is located and found the footprints on the bank of
the Manju River at an elevation of 9,350 feet
(2,850 meters).
One
of the three footprints found on Wednesday is
about 1 foot (30 centimeters) long, with an
appearance similar to those shown in sketches of
the purported apelike creature, the team said.
To
read more about the discovery go to: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/22041259/
The
Yeti footprint discovery incidentally coincides
with the launch of a playful Yeti- themed website
a friend of Peace Coffee just created. The site
can be viewed at www.fairtradeyeti.com.
We encourage you to submit photos of any potential
yeti sightings you've captured on film. The
website will continue to grow as long as people
keep submitting.
Also
if you love Yetis as much as we do, you can wear
our newest Sockguy addition with a smiling yeti
face on the ankle band. Check it out here!
