| Summer's
in full swing, and the Peace Coffee crew is out
and about promoting that tasty brew we call
"the right bean." In this issue of Fair
Grounds, we profile our newest coffeehouse
account, Common Roots Café. We also feature
Nate's parting article on his trip to Chiapas,
Mexico, origin of our Mexican beans. And we offer
our Summer Survival Kit, with everything you need
to make and enjoy cold press coffee, including
your own Yeti (read on to find out more!). These
articles plus more photos from Josh's viewfinder,
a Peace Pride winner and a new recipe add up to a
pretty full issue, so grab a iced Peace Coffee,
settle back and read on...

by Nate Stevens, Former Peace Coffee Customer Service Representative
In
March of 2007, I traveled from Minneapolis,
Minnesota, the home of Peace Coffee, to San
Cristobal de las Casas in Chiapas, Mexico, to meet
up with a varied group of people who had all come
to learn more about the Fair Trade movement from
direct contact and immersion within the
communities of the coffee growing region of
Chiapas. There were 12 of us, if memory serves me:
college students, Fair Trade business owners and
employees, an 8 year old daughter of one of the
men, and several retired people simply interested
in this experience. Our trip was lead by Chris and
Jodie Treeter of Higher Grounds Coffee in
Michigan, who have been leading Fair Trade
immersion trips for several years now.

In
last month's newsletter, we featured some of the
best Peace Coffee items for the summer. We've
decided to create a Summer Survival Kit that will
get you through the heat waves to come.
The
Kit Includes: a Toddy Maker, one pound of our new
Yeti Cold Press, a water bottle, and a felted Fair
Trade Yeti ornament. Use the Toddy Maker to brew
batches of our newest coffee, the Yeti Cold Press
Blend. Before you take off on your morning commute
to work or a leisurely Sunday morning bike ride,
fill up your Peace Coffee Water Bottle with ice
cubes and the chilled cold press. And one last
thing, don't forget to grab your Fair Trade Yeti
friend. As much as Yetis like hanging out in
freezers, they also like to go for rides. They fit
perfectly in water bottle cages and between the
spokes on a bike wheel. If you follow all of these
instructions you should have no problem staying
cool this summer!
Fair
Trade Yetis are Fun for All Ages!
Recently
a customer told us about these super adorable Fair
Trade Yeti ornaments made in Nepal. She saw the
release of our newest coffee, the Yeti Cold Press,
and they immediately came to mind. The Yeti
ornaments are available through the Tibet
Collection, a group dedicated to bringing
better economic opportunities to Himalayan
artisans through the development and marketing of
their craft traditions, and to preserving Tibetan
culture. Averaging five inches tall, the Yetis are
made with natural sheared wool, the fibers of
which artisans in Kathmandu, Nepal, boil, beat and
roll into a flat, dense mat. The felt is then
dyed, molded and sewn into decorative arts and
gifts. These little Yetis have quickly won
the hearts of all the staff here. They have become
the "office pets" we are not allowed to
have. Some of us bike to work with our Yetis and
Derek's Yeti is beating him at chess on regular
basis. Each Yeti is slightly different since they
are made by hand. Some have bigger feet or a
larger tummy, etc. Some are slightly frowning and
have shorter arms. The Yetis can't wait to meet
new friends and be accepted in society for the
furry fun creatures they truly are. Befriend a
Yeti today!

Rosemary
Erb stopped by Peace Coffee one afternoon. When
she saw the release of our newest coffee, the Yeti
Cold Press Blend, she told us that she had her
very own Yeti friend that she bought at a local
secondhand shop. As you can see, every Yeti is a
little different but all of them our huggable and
lovable.

On
Saturday morning, our roasters Derek & Ryan
greeted customers at Peace Coffee's newest café
account on 26th and Lyndale. Common
Roots Café
has been open for less than a week and is off to a
great start. They are the only café in the city
to serve our seasonal Dominican
Republic Roast
and they have also worked closely with our
roasting team to create two unique espresso blends
for their café.
The
espresso they recommend for "sipping" is
appropriately named The
Roots Blend.
It is a bold well-balanced espresso with a sweet
herbal/floral start, fading into a nice buttery
vanilla caramel middle, finishing with a spicy
currant and a touch of chocolate.

| Every
week, Josh is given day old pastries by the
wonderful staff at the French Meadow Bakery
Café. He brings them back to the office in
colorful paper bags decorated by their
staff, full of the goodies you see on the
plate. It's what most of us here look
forward to every Tuesday! Josh appreciates
customers who understand he needs a lot of
"food fuel" to get the job done.
Handouts are always welcome! |

Four-year old Adrianna Edlund sent us this photo (actually her parents did) of her with her bike and Peace Coffee bike jersey.
Adrianna's Reason for loving Peace Coffee: It gets her Dad out of bed in the morning.
Favorite biking outfit: Peace Coffee bike jersey and pink cowboy boots, what else?
Dream: To get to visit Peace Coffee someday and see her picture on the refrigerator (the true place of honor in the mind of a four year old).
True display of Peace Coffee pride: Adrianna got her jersey the day after she took her training wheels off. After donning the jersey, she sprinted off on her bike declaring "I feel free!"
Congratulations, Adrianna! You win a pound of your favorite Peace Coffee (for your Dad).
If you're passionate about Peace Coffee,
Show it! Send us:
— a photo showing your "Peace Coffee Pride”
— a short written testimonial about how much you love us
— an original coffee poem or haiku (three lines, 5 syllables in the first, 7 in the second, 5 in the last)
Each month, we’ll choose one entry to appear in the following
Fair Grounds newsletter. If we choose yours, you’ll win a pound of your favorite Peace Coffee coffee. Please send your entry to
mel@peacecoffee.com.
Contest ends: August 13th

"The ideal of a single civilization for everyone implicit in the cult of progress and technique impoverishes and mutilates us. Every view of the world that becomes extinct, every culture that disappears, diminishes a possibility of
life."
