 The
last weekend of January, the state of Minnesota
was hit with a cold front that wouldn’t leave.
The temperature hit 10 below with the wind chill
and continued to drop in the first week of
February. The cold spell happened to coincide
during a weekend filled with outdoor sport events
that most sane people would decide to avoid but
Minnesotans take to the cold like it is a sort of
call to battle. As if we are saying “Bring It
On!” and “Show us what you got!” Having
lived in Minnesota my whole life, I am one of
these crazies.

 Football
fans from all over the United States get extremely
excited for the Super Bowl weekend, whether it is
the hype, the commercials, or the half-time show.
People all tune in to watch this classic American
event. Most bikers in Minneapolis, however, hardly
take notice of the big event. They are spending
their own time preparing and planning for the
Stupor Bowl Bike Race. This year marked the 10th
anniversary of the alley cat/messenger bike race
which takes place every February on Super Bowl
weekend.

 Baffin
Island of the Canadian Artic is ground zero for
climate change. The ice hunting season has been
cut in half, weather, precipitation and wind
patterns are changing, animals for which the
elders have no names are appearing, permafrost is
melting, ponds are draining and polar bears are
beginning to wander into villages looking for
food. No better place exists to witness the
disruption of ecosystems and cultures by climate
change. This February, Will Steger and his
expedition team of Inuit hunters, explorers and
educators, will embark on a four-month-long
expedition to get a first-hand look at how global
warming is impacting the Arctic landscape,
wildlife, and human communities.

Here's what he told us: "It's not
specifically about Peace Coffee, although because
your coffee is so... pure, I suppose is the word,
this applies more to it than to most coffees.
Other coffee gets kind of thin and almost chalky
tasting, and you know they added a lot chemicals
and the workers weren't treated fairly. So when it
slips past your heart and into your stomach, you
feel a sad sort of pity. But with Peace Coffee,
it's so pure! It truly embodies the haiku. And
when your coffee slips past my heart, I feel the
heartbeat of the earth, as deep and permeating as
a drumbeat, filling me with a peace and energy
that can only be described as Peace Coffee Pride."
