Wow – the holidays are almost upon us (where did the fall go?)! It's time to wrap up your seasonal shopping with a big bow and distribute presents to those near (or far) and dear to us. In this issue of Fair Grounds, we offer some traditional (Peace Gear) and non-traditional (Oxfam's Unwrapped Gift Program) ways to gift that special someone. We also follow the adventures of emerging beer activists Melanee and Ryan, spotlight a new Fair Trade wine, feature Keith's musings on our French Roast and offer a holiday recipe. Snuggle up with a steaming mug of your favorite Peace Coffee and read on...

Every year during the holidays the Peace Coffee Crew likes to highlight an alternative gift giving opportunity. This year Oxfam International’s "Unwrapped" gift program takes the cake for the most unique and “non-materialistic” gift! For example, how about giving a loved one a sheep or a can of worms?

More than a can, a pound of worms provides farmers with an indispensable tool for cultivating their land. Not only do these squirmy creatures produce fertilizer, they also break down organic compounds in the earth and enrich land for farming. Now that's a gift that should worm its way into anyone’s affections!

Raising sheep allows women to create their own income. What's more, the sheep's wool is used to make local textiles. When you give this gift, you know it's helping others, so there's no need to count sheep -- you're sure to sleep well!

Other Oxfam Unwrapped gifts include a cow, irrigating a farmer's land for two months, supporting a small farmer, planting a garden, providing gender rights training, supporting indigenous craftswomen, starting a small business, and investing in a Fair Trade coffee cooperative. There are 37 gifts in all, ranging from $18 (can of worms) to staffing a workers rights center ($7500).

Visit www.oxfamamericaunwrapped.com to view and select a gift that helps people in need!

The following is a conversation with Tiffany Tompkins, owner of Etica Fair Trade. This is the first business in the US to import and sell Fair Trade Ceritified Wine.

When did Etica Fair Trade start?
I started selling Fair Trade handmade crafts in November 2005 and started selling wine in November 2006. We were incorporated in September 2005 so that makes us just a little over 1-years old.

Why did you decide to sell fair trade products?
I received my masters in international Trade Policy and was recruited to work in China upon graduation. While living in China, I taught WTO trade policy classes to Chinese businessmen and government employees. Realizing how WTO rules were only benefiting a select few, I started exploring other trade relationships as a model for better business, economic growth, and sustainable development.

by Melanee Meegan, Marketing Manager & Beer Activist

On the Saturday after Thanksgiving, Ryan and I decided to enjoy two of our favorite things -- beer and biking. We've both been reading Fermenting Revolution, the book featured in last month’s Fair Grounds. The book makes a great case for supporting local craft breweries. This was the impetus for us to visit one of the newest and tastiest beer companies in the Twin Cities!
