Wow,
it's hard to believe that it's mid August already!
But while it's been a hectic summer so far for the
Peace Coffee crew, it's also been a productive
one. We're fortunate to have found a new head
roaster right here at home – Keith Tomlinson. He's been our biodiesel van driver for the past
year and is savoring his new role. Meet him in the
Roaster's Corner. Also in this issue, we focus on
the crew's recent travels. Beth Backen reflects on
her trip to Guatemala with Peace Coffee and
Habitat for Humanity, Nate Stevens presents the
first of a two-part account of his visit to the
farmers at the PANGOA coop in Peru, and Ryan
Seibold relates his biking adventure to the Green
Man Festival. We've also got an introduction to
the Minnesota State Fair's new Eco Experience, a
new recipe and a winner for this month's Peace
Coffee Pride contest. Grab an iced Peace Coffee,
read on and enjoy...

Beth Backen, Shipping and Receiving Coordinator
In May 2006, Peace Coffee took a delegation
to Guatemala to participate in Habitat for Humanity’s
Global Village program. The idea was prompted by our
concern about the effects of Hurricane Stan on our trading
partners in Guatemala. While we waited for news that was
slow to come, we decided we wanted to do something more
this year, so we began to plan a trip to build some houses
in Guatemala. It was a unique opportunity for those of us
who went on the trip. We had a chance to learn firsthand
about housing issues in one of the producer countries we
partner with – an experience that will certainly be on
my mind as I think about how to keep improving Fair Trade
practices. During our stay we worked on two houses,
building walls of one, pouring the foundation and starting
the walls of the other. I was delighted to receive an
envelope in the mail the other day with photos of the
families in their completed houses.

Nate Stevens, Customer Accounts Representative
In
April of this year, Scott Patterson and I had the
privilege of visiting our farmer friends at the
PANGOA coop, and also made a brief visit to the
newly registered members of Cooperative Coffees in
Pichinaki, Peru. Following is a travel journal
recounting my observations and experiences on this
amazing journey. I had only been out of the US one
time previously, to Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, so
this was a very powerful learning experience for
me. This article is part 1 of a 2 part series. In
Part One, I give a journal of our trip through the
Andes on the Peru Central Highway. In Part Two, I
will recount my experiences with the members of
the coop in PANGOA.

Esperanza (general manager of coop de PANGOA) and
a driver picked Scott and I up from our hotel
room in Lima about 30 minutes ago. We are in a car
on the way to PANGOA. American music is playing on
the radio, Monday morning traffic everywhere...We
are on a 12-hour ride through up and over the
Andes and down into the tropical coffee growing
regions on the other side of this awesome mountain
range. Lima is huge!! I am told 13 million people
call this mega-city home!! Traffic is CRAZY! It's
a free for all, watch out bikers and pedestrians,
and the exhaust is thick and smoggy. We are
passing trucks full of bananas, moto taxis with
their passengers going to do daily activities,
roadside stands selling mangos, bananas, snacks,
breakfast, fruit juice, lots of Coca-Cola. Busy
city life here, I wonder if the hustle and bustle
of it all ever grinds on people the way it does on
me sometimes....

Ryan Seibold
I
left work on Friday afternoon when I was done with
my roasting shift, but instead of going home, I
was dropped off in Hugo, Minnesota. From there I
jumped on my bike and headed up north. I made it
70 miles to Hinckley, Minnesota, before stopping
and setting up camp for the night. The next
morning I headed onto the scenic Willard-Munger
trail, www.munger-trail.com/m/.
Sixty miles later I arrived in Duluth just in time
for the first musical act at the Green Man
Festival. I was greeted by members of the Peace
Coffee Crew, who were serving up iced coffee at
the Bayfront Festival Park, just a
few feet from Lake Superior in the heart of
historic Duluth. I had a great weekend hanging out
with the festival goers and serving up Peace
Coffee. Lastly, I was happy to have a ride back
home in the Peace Coffee van.

It's
New! It's Green! And It's Coming to the Minnesota
State Fair!
New
this year, the Minnesota State Fair and the
Minnesota Pollution Control Agency are pleased to
announce the grand opening of the Eco Experience at
the 2006 Great Minnesota Get-Together, August 24th
through September 4th. Located in the Progress
Center building, the entrance to the Eco Experience
is marked by a 123-foot-tall blade from a wind
turbine. As the fairground’s newest permanent
landmark, the blade is supported by 60 cubic yards
of concrete, and marks the first time one has ever
been mounted vertically. Upon entering the building,
visitors will find a functioning example of an
outdoor rain garden, a walk-through eco home and
garage featuring an electric vehicle and plug-in
hybrid car, a solar-powered boat plus the newest
green technology, including a hydrogen-powered ice
resurfacer.
