Ahh true spring is finally here! That time between the drippy days of April and the dog days of summer brings our favorite weather. With temps in the 60s and 70s and peeks of sunshine, what's a Peace Coffee staffer to do? Ride his or her bike, of course! And now along with our usual haunts, we've got a new trail to follow, courtesy of the recently released Northeast Arts District Bike Map. Spring also brings travel, and some intrepid members of the Peace Coffee crew are about to join Habitat for Humanity on a journey to build houses in Guatemala. Read about both the map and Habitat trip in this issue of Fair Grounds. You'll also find an article from a loyal Peace Coffee customer on gardening with coffee grounds, a new recipe and roaster's corner, plus this month's Peace Coffee Pride winner. Read on and enjoy...

OK. Most of us would agree that recycling and "sustainable" lifestyles are steps toward saving the planet. Each in our own way, we are responsible for and can benefit from simple actions. For my small part, I recycle our plastic/ paper/ aluminum/ glass; try to eat organic foods often and consider how much gas I use traveling from point A to point B. I'm not the best proverbial example of living simply, but I try.

Did I mention I enjoy Peace Coffee? It seems that I drink a lot of Peace Coffee or rather share a lot of coffee with my family, friends and neighbors. I like it a bit on the strong and flavorful side, which means I might use a bit more grounds than normal people. To give you an idea, most coffee shop coffee tastes like tea to me.

On May 20th a group of Peace Coffee employees and friends leave for Guatemala to build a house in the San Marcos region. The trip is a part of the Habitat for Humanity International Global Village program. The goal of the program is to give participants a short-term opportunity to contribute to Habitat's work firsthand. They will work for four days alongside members of the host community to build affordable and decent homes for families in the area. Peace Coffee gets most of our Guatemalan coffee from this region so there is already a long established connection to the area.

Employees will have the opportunity to visit and stay with coffee farmers for a few days after the Habitat project ends. To date, Habitat for Humanity has built more than 200,000 houses, sheltering more than 1,000,000 people in more than 3,000 communities worldwide. Peace Coffee is proud to take part in this positive and much needed Habitat for Humanity project. Participants will report back on progress made on the homes that they work on upon their return.

To find out more about opportunities and projects through Habitat for Humanity and the Global Village Program visit http://www.habitat.org/gv/.

Northeast Minneapolis' Art-A-Whirl® event draws over 20,000 visitors into the Arts District during the weekend-long event. Over 300 artists and studios open their doors during Art-A-Whirl®, boasting a variety of mediums from pottery, to photography, to film, to performance art. The First Thursdays in the Arts District event grows each month, as more and more artists embrace each opportunity to share their work with the public. So many galleries so close together... so much to see... so little parking... such a pain to constantly park, pull out, drive, fight to park again. What's a visitor to do?

Altered Esthetics is proud to announce the release of the Northeast Arts District Bike Map, helping route the quickest and safest ways for folks to get around the Northeast Minneapolis arts district, from gallery to gallery - by bike. The Bike Map will encourage foot and bicycle traffic in northeast during arts district events and art crawls instead of vehicular traffic, making gallery-hopping much safer and convenient for everyone coming to Northeast for events. The Arts District Bike Map is also our way of inviting and welcoming the thriving Minneapolis bike community to actively and more easily interact with the arts community. We hope to increase the flow of traffic between the central galleries and the outlying galleries, fostering movement throughout the district. One more thing about the map - it's free! Free for folks to download and print themselves, free for folks to pick up, and free for the galleries participating in the program. The Bike Map was sponsored by Peace Coffee, Hedberg Maps, Behind Bars, Artistic Indulgence and Altered Esthetics as part of their continued commitment to the Minneapolis bike and arts communities.

Anybody can get a free copy of the Northeast Arts District Bike Map by visiting one of the gallery locations, going online to the Altered Esthetics Website, e-mailing bikemap@alteredesthetics.com, or sending a self-addressed-stamped-envelope to Altered Esthetics – Bike Map, 1300 Quincy St. NE, Minneapolis MN 55413.
