Cold temperatures, frozen landscape, winter wind…are we letting it get us down? No Way! In this issue of
Fair Grounds, we relate how Peace Coffee Bike Team member Mario Minelli found a unique way to keep cycling despite the ravages brought on by Ol' Man Winter. We also bring you a report on the Fair Trade Fashion Show at the WTO Ministerial in Hong Kong, announce the results of our Tsunami fundraising efforts, and offer a new column --
Cool Opportunities. That plus a new recipe, an expanded contest and the ever-popular
Roaster's Corner and we've got a fine issue (if we do say so ourselves). Grab a mug of your favorite Peace Coffee brew, read on and enjoy…

Congratulations! We made our dollar goal on the sales of Tsunami Relief Roast.
We'd like to extend a big thanks to all of our customers and to the Greater Good network
(www.gearthatgives.com) for making this possible. We sent $35,000 to Aceh, most of it collected $10 at a time, pound by pound, through the generosity of our customers.
Just this week two Peace Coffee staffers, Jamie Schumacher and Anna Canning, left for Sumatra to observe the results of your contributions and visit with the farmers of PPGKO (the Sumatran coffee co-op from whom we buy our coffee and which was involved in the relief effort after the tsunami). Once they return,
they'll be sure to share stories and photos from their travels, particularly of the work that has been done in the past year since the Tsunami. Thanks again for your participation and effort in making this a successful fundraising program.

by Patricia Jurewicz, Senior Associate, Trade and Global Governance at the Institute for Agriculture and Trade Policy
Caught between protesters and government negotiators, Fair Trade offered a beacon of hope during the Sixth World Trade Organization (WTO) Ministerial Conference in Hong Kong. With major support from the Swiss and Canadian governments, IATP and an international steering committee hosted the 2005 Hong Kong Fair Trade Fair and Symposium. It featured over fifty Fair Trade producers and NGOs from twenty countries, a welcoming reception with a traditional lion dance, high profile speakers such as Mary Robinson and trade ministers from India and Germany, and the highlight -- a Fair Trade fashion show. From December 13-16, 2005, the Fair Trade Fair and Symposium promoted a working success story to government ministers and their delegations, to NGOs who observed the negotiations, and to the thousands of demonstrators on the street.

If you live in Minnesota, you are most likely familiar with the skyways systems. If you
haven't been here before, skyways exist in the downtown areas across our cold and snowy state to provide a warm and dry path for getting from one building to another. Skyways are great for walkers but bikers are not afforded a bike lane in these unique indoor walkways. Instead, they are left to battle the outdoor elements. Except for February
8th, when the city of St. Paul opened their skyways for mountain bikers from across the state to ride in! The race, sponsored by the energy drink Red Bull, started on the upper level of the Galtier Plaza and ended on the upper level of the Excel Energy Center. During the one mile long course, bikers encountered steps, ramps, carpeting, slippery tile, a tunnel, more than 20 doorways and many quick turns.
