Fair Trade activities in the Twin Cities area and beyond are really heating up (excuse the pun). This summer, you'll find some of the Peace Coffee crew racing as part of the first ever Peace Coffee Bike Team, while others of us will be savoring our favorite brew and enjoying the fresh baked treats at the French Meadow Bakery & Café. And in September, we'll be attending a National Fair Trade Conference in Chicago. You'll find more on all of this in this month's issue of Fair Grounds, along with a call to action on CAFTA, a new recipe, and a brand spanking new crossword puzzle contest. Settle back and enjoy...

Peace Coffee's commitment to bike delivering our beans across town attracts a lot of attention. As Brad, our intrepid biker will attest to, there are the occasional vulgarities and threats thrown from speeding cars of the not so forward-thinking individuals. "It's endemic of our society to have hostility towards people on bikes, but for every bad interaction there's at least five supportive people cheering me on," says Brad. Peace Coffee's first ever Bike Racing Team gets their fair share of hoots and hollers but for the most part it's the good kind. Usually it's from the fans cheering them on during a race or an announcer letting them know that they are in the lead! We are proud to sponsor a dynamic team line up of Mountain Bikers, Roadies & Triathlons. They are hard to miss with their loud Peace Coffee jersey & shorts.

So far this year the team has taken the title in the West Salem Touchstone Triathlon. Husband and wife, Ann and Joe Moyer, & Randi Foraker took first place by over 13 minutes. Other riders like Mario Minelli and Andrew Chaffe have had a terrific season so far, placing in the top five of their divisions in many races already this summer. If you see them on the road or at a race show them some love and we'll do our job keeping them caffeinated!

When: September 30 to October 2, 2005

Thousands of people like you believe in Fair Trade as a model of economic and environmental justice. Many of us will be gathering in Chicago from September 30 to October 2, 2005, for a national Fair Trade conference to strengthen Fair Trade mission-driven organizations and attract customers and activists to the movement. Over the course of a weekend, Fair Trade organizations, consumers, activists and businesses will:

* Build energy and excitement about Fair Trade among those committed to its principles.
* Bring the principles and practices of Fair Trade businesses, programs and products to national attention.
* Develop relationships and deepen the understanding among committed Fair Trade leaders.
* Reach out to new consumers and constituents, activists, grassroots organizations and allies.
* Create education and action tools for new and committed Fair Traders to become a definable movement beyond the conference.

If you are interested in joining us, please visit http://www.fairtradefederation.org/2005ftconference/ where you can learn more about the conference and register to attend. A National Call for People to reflect on whether CAFTA Measures up to Principles of Just Trade

From the US Interfaith Trade Justice Campaign (Trade Serving People-Not People Serving Trade)

On June 23, a year after signing, the White House finally sent to Congress the implementing legislation for a U.S. free trade agreement with Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua and the Dominican Republic (DR-CAFTA).  The Central America Free Trade Agreement passed in the Senate on June 30th with a nine vote margin (54-45).  For CAFTA to be enacted or defeated, it must now be voted on in the House between July 12th and 29th.

Even if you’re just in Minneapolis on an airplane layover you can enjoy some of the best organic food and coffee our town has to offer at the Minneapolis/St.Paul International Airport. The French Meadow Bakery & Café is hailed as one of the best bakeries and organic food restaurants in the city. They are famous for their Hemp Breads and brownies, wild rice cakes, and other yeast and wheat free products.

Lynn Gordon, founder and president of the Bakery, has been championing for organic, local and sustainable food for several decades. It looks like all her hard work is finally paying off. The opening of the French Meadow Café and Bakery at the airport is a real turning point for what most health conscious individuals have come to assume they will have to eat during their routine airport layovers. No longer must they decide between a McDonalds egg McMuffin and a Starbucks Vienna Roast Coffee for breakfast. Instead travelers can enjoy pancakes made with organic flour and real maple syrup, and a hot cup of Peace Coffee Colombian Heavy Pedal Roast. Lunch fare includes salads with fresh organic greens and free range chicken and tasty tomato basil soup.

So next time you are catching a flight at the Lindberg Terminal be sure to visit the French Meadow and Bakery Café airport location on Concourse F. Hours are 5:30 a.m. – 9:00 p.m. everyday of the week.

We're giving away coffee!

Think you know a lot about coffee? This month, instead of a trivia question we offer a crossword puzzle. Click here for the puzzle and clues. Entering is easy and it's FUN!

Scott Bradley is the winner of last month's Coffee Knowledge question. He correctly identified 1732 (A) as the year that Johann Sebastian Bach — a big coffee drinker — composed his Coffee Cantata. Congratulations, Scott!

"Currently, trade discussions begin by asking how policies will be good for business and economic growth. We need to ask how trade policies will be good for those who live in situations of poverty."
