The
cold temperatures and snow may be lingering, but
at Peace Coffee, we’re longing for March to go
out like a lamb and usher in the hopeful Spring.
But until then, we’re not hibernating. Far from
it. We’re busy roasting, packing and shipping
our delectable beans and still finding time to get
out into the community (and around the world) to
spread the Fair Trade message. And we’re ticking
away at our goal of raising $30,000 for tsunami
relief (you can buy our Tsunami Relief Roast by
following this link).

In
this issue of Fair Grounds, we feature part
two of Andy’s Chiapas journal, offer student
reflections on the United Students for Fair Trade
Convergence and uncover the artistic side of
several Peace Coffee crew members. We’ve also
got a new recipe and trivia question, so settle
back and read on…

by Andy Lambert, Events and Outreach Coordinator
From January 31st to February 5th, Andy had the
good fortune to travel to Chiapas, Mexico and meet
with Zapatistas, La Abejas, various NGOs, and the
incredible people who grow our "Bird
Mountain" coffee. His journal, the first part
of which was excerpted in last month’s Fair
Grounds, continues here…
Overnight in Chixlton (cheech-el-tone), an
indigenous community
We arrived in Chixlton about two hours late and
the people from the community had left (they
intended to greet us upon our arrival — damn!)
except for a few members from the Mesa de la
Directiva (Board of Directors). We slept on woods
planks in the one room clinic and told stories
with shadow puppets (we’re all kids at heart!)
on the ceiling using our hands and flashlights.
The roosters didn’t stop all night, but we
all woke up refreshed by the cool mountain air.

Last
month Peace Coffee attended the 2nd Annual United
Students for Fair Trade Convergence in Chicago,
Illinois. We had the pleasure of driving a group of
Macalester College students down with us. Here,
these students share their experience in a report
written by Maura Ratty Shramko, Kristina Badger
Fong, Maggie Mole Kinkead, Claire "Rabbit"
Stoscheck, and Talia Otter Kahn-Kravis.
"Hello,
my name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father;
prepare to die"
-
Inigo Montoya (Mandy Patinkin) "The Princess
Bride"
Last
weekend, we went to a convergence with Inigo
Montoya. This was not a convergence about scaling
the Cliffs of Insanity or fighting off ROUSs,
apparently Inigo is no longer interested in such
things. Rather, Señor Montoya is very concerned
about the issue of Fair Trade.
Admittedly,
this is a bit of a stretch. Inigo Montoya’s
counterpart, actor Mandy Patinkin, was present at
the United Students for Fair Trade International
Convergence this past weekend in Chicago that his
son helped to organize.

Jamie Schumacher, our office
and accounting manager, is curating the Art of Tragedy, a
group show in which artists use their own way of dealing
with personal tragedies as a tool to help others who are
now going through a very severe time of need, specifically
those affected by the recent earthquake/tsunami tragedy.
Two of the 16 participating artists in the exhibit, which
opened March 12th at the Altered Esthetics Gallery in
Minneapolis, are Peace Coffee employees.
Emily Snyder is currently finishing up her seasonal
position at Peace Coffee where she holds the title for
quickest bagger in the state of Minnesota. Emily attended
the School of the Museum of Fine Arts Boston/Tufts
University for two years, but her strong Minnesotan roots
pulled her back to this lovely state.

The
Value Added Conference
by Jim Kleinschmit, IATP Senior Program Associate
Thanks
to a donation by Peace Coffee, the participants in
the 7th Annual Midwest Value Added Agriculture
Conference held in Eau Claire, Wisconsin, were
able to enjoy Fair Trade brew throughout the two
day event. Over 190 people attended, including
farmers, agricultural business people, farm
educators and other interested individuals. They
provided educational opportunities and information
for rural citizens interested in direct marketing
and value-adding their local products. Twenty-one
sessions featured topics such as: Pricing
Myths...How do I set My Price?; Selling More Than
Just Your Product at Farmers Markets; and Fresh,
Local and On the Menu: Working with Institutional
Buyers. One attendee wrote the following note to
us, "Thanks for doing a great job on the
Midwest Value Added Agriculture Conference. I had
a great time, learned a lot and made some great
contacts. Hope to be back in '06."
