Summertime,
the living is easy, the fish are jumping, and the
bikes are hitting the road. The arrival of our
favorite season brings with it a more active
schedule and more opportunities to promote our
Fair Trade message. In this month's Fair
Grounds, we take an informative and amusing
journey through the life of a coffee bean, from
the perspective of the bean itself! We've also got
the next installment in the continuing adventures
of Brad the Bike Delivery Guy plus a Community
Caravan, Fair Trade Fact, recipe, and trivia
question. Grab a cup of good coffee (we bet we
know where you can get some) and read on!

Kopi (bahasa indonesian for coffee)
So,
you drink a dark liquid made by infusing hot water
with a ground version of me but you don’t know
much about how I came to be? Well, that’s no
good! Let me tell you a story about my life so you
can appreciate me more fully.
Some
folks say I was discovered by a goatherd named
Kaldi sometime in the sixth century in Ethiopia,
when he noticed his goats were dancing around
after eating the cherries from a particular type
of bush. Whether you believe that version of my
origins or not, I do grow inside of a cherry on a
bush, and I imagine if goats ate enough of me,
they would begin to dance!
Where
do I come from these days? I’m pretty fussy
about where I want to grow up, so I stick to hot
and hilly areas between the Tropics of Cancer and
Capricorn. I also think I taste much better (and
equally importantly, do not require pesticides or
artificial fertilizers) when I am grown in the
shade of other trees rather than in huge sunny
tracts of land. Each of my bushes has big
beautiful leaves and can keep producing for up to
30 years!

the
continuing saga of Brad, our intrepid bike
delivery guy
It’s
early Sunday evening, could be any Sunday provided
the sunlight is hitting the city in a perfect,
golden slant and birds are conversing rapidly
between trees. This particular Sunday I am riding
down Bryant Ave., cruising leisurely, heading
home. My legs are covered with dirt and my shins
speckled with cuts. My Alterra t-shirt is shredded
at the shoulder. In my backpack I’ve got a loaf
of Brownberry 12-grain, peanut butter, Huber’s
strawberry jam, and a quart of soymilk, typical
dinner stuff for the single vegetarian. Under the
food is an empty Nalgene water bottle and strapped
to the outside of the bag is my helmet (the battle
having been won).
I
had ridden across town earlier to Wirth Park, a
vestige of Midwestern woodland, golf course, and
gathering place for lonely, swarthy men, all
wrapped into one mosquito paradise. I was meeting
a friend and his bike shop co-workers to ride the
maze of trails that seem to connect all kinds of
random points throughout the wooded areas.

Some New Arrivals
A male and female wolf were born in northern Minnesota on May 5, followed by a second female on May 12. These three pups join an Exhibit Wolf Pack at the International Wolf Center in Ely, Minnesota. The Center teaches about wolves, their relationship to wild lands and the human role in their future. Not even a month old the pups came out for a full day event at French Regional Park in Plymouth, MN. Presentations and viewing of the pups occurred all day. The last showing was outside but due to the cold weather only two came out to greet the audience. The pups range from 2.8 to 5 pounds. Wolf pups must mature quickly for survival, and these pups have exhibited normal growth, which includes:
Howling for companionship - 8 days old
Eyes opened - 10 days old
Dominating littermate - 13 days of age
Canine teeth and incisors irrupting - 13 days
Ears beginning to stand up and pups hear sounds - 14 days old
Fear response to noise (startled and tucked tail reaction) - 17 days old
Wolf pup nannies from 23 states and three countries will provide around-the-clock feeding and observation. Careful planning and constant attention are essential for the hand-raising of vulnerable wolf pups. For more information about the International Wolf Center and pup updates visit

World Oceans Day: June 8th
In celebration of this annual global event, The Institute for Agriculture and Trade Policy, in partnership with the Seafood Choices Alliance and Chefs Collaborative hosted a dinner and panel discussion titled "Charting Sustainable Seafood Choices in the 21st Century. With the help of some of the Twin Cities top restaurants, seafood purveyors, food distributors and consumer groups this event demonstrated that it's possible to enjoy seafood that is delicious and at the same time conserves our ocean resources. "There is growing awareness that the seafood choices made by consumers matter in the future health of our oceans and waters," said Dr. Mike Skladany, Director of IATP's Fish and Marine Conservation Program. "Making sustainable seafood choices is one vital way that seafood lovers can ensure a healthy ocean and fisheries." To highlight seafood issues and the delicious sustainable seafood available to consumers, a Twin Cities chapter of the Seafood Choices Alliance is working with Chefs Collaborative–a network of the nation's top chefs–on a series of culinary and educational activities.

The
constant pursuit of cheap food comes at a price.
Supporting farmers and ranchers who use healthy,
sustainable production methods is the only way to
ensure that our food remains safe, healthy, and
delicious.
