Peace
Coffee has been a hive of activity this past
month, but our buzz isn't just from our daily
brew. We attended the SCAA meeting in Atlanta,
participated in the Living Green Expo, planted
trees for Arbor Day and biked across the country
(well Brad did, anyway). In this month's issue of
Fair Grounds, we give you all the details —
Brad's amazing bike odyssey, our meeting with
Jimmy Carter, and TJ's report from his recent trip
to Colombia with Witness for Peace. There's
something for everyone, so settle in with a
steaming cup of Peace Coffee and enjoy…

Bill Harris, Cooperative Coffees
After
this year's busy Specialty Coffee Association of
America meeting in Atlanta, physically exhausted
but mentally invigorated Peace Coffee staffers
took part in an inspiring post-SCAA forum
sponsored by Cooperative Coffees, Equal Exchange
and the Fair Trade Resource Network. The three
organizations partnered for the first time for
three days of meetings, speaking engagements and
fun with producers representing five countries and
a number of important non-profit allies from the
Fair Trade movement.
On
Tuesday, we gathered on the peaceful grounds of
the Carter Center in downtown Atlanta for a full
day of post-SCAA decompression, sharing and
planning.

..continuing
tales from our intrepid bike delivery guy
The
city she is a strong-willed but beautiful
temptress. Rich in rewards but able also to crush
a man who attempts to defy her. I think some one
said this once, or something akin to it at least.
After this past winter it seemed that all I could
think about was getting out, putting some distance
between us. I would find some mountains. I would
buy a portable water filter from REI and intend to
use it. I would establish unreasonable
expectations of what freedom feels like and April
seemed as good a time as any to set out.

T.J. Semanchin, Peace Coffee roaster extraordinaire
A
few years ago, I had the pleasure of meeting John
Peg, the regional director for Witness for Peace (WFP).
We had mutual respect for each other's work, what
with Peace Coffee's focus on Fair Trade and WFP's
efforts directed toward human rights and U.S.
foreign policy. We discussed teaming up by taking a
trip to a Latin American country to explore these
issues through both the sociopolitical and economic
lenses as well as share our expertise. Witness for
Peace leads delegations in many of the same
countries that Peace Coffee buys from, but I was
interested in one country specifically. Because of
safety concerns, Colombia was our only trading
partner we had not visited. John told me WFP could
provide the security blanket I needed to feel
comfortable enough for a visit. So this past March,
seventeen other Americans and I met in Miami to
embark on a ten-day visit to Colombia.

Living
Green Expo, May 1st and 2nd
For
the third year, Peace Coffee participated in the
Living Green Expo in St. Paul, Minnesota. The
largest event of its kind in the region, it
provides "real solutions for people to live
better, healthier lives with less impact on the
environment." Peace Coffee was one of more
than 250 sound products, services and practices
showcased during the two-day Expo. More than
14,000 people attended this year, making it a
knock-out event. In fact, we ran out of sample
cups midway through the first day! Most impressive
about this event are the way the organizers handle
waste reduction and food collection. More than 93%
of the waste generated during the Expo was either
composted or recycled, and more than one ton of
food was collected and donated to Second Harvest,
the Upper Midwest's largest hunger relief
organization. For more info on next year’s
Living Green Festival, visit www.livinggreenexpo.org.

Arbor
Day, May 8th
We
couldn't ask for more beautiful weather for this
year's Arbor Day festivities! More than 200
volunteers planted 150 trees at four different
locations along the Midtown Greenway Corridor.
Tree Trust staff and master gardeners provided
planting materials and demonstrated proper tree
planting methods.
|
|
|
Peace Coffee provided coffee to
all the volunteers and assisted in the tree
planting. The trees make a remarkable difference,
something we couldn't help but notice as we rode
our bicycles back along the corridor. These
aspiring young trees now cover the old railroad
tracks, waving hello to passers by.

Bridgett Jensen
knew that coffee has been used as a natural exfoliant, and the
Japanese have used the oils in coffee for their moisturizing benefits. Coffee
has also been used for its healing properties on damaged
skin.

A
strong nation, like a strong person, can afford to
be gentle, firm, thoughtful, and restrained. It
can afford to extend a helping hand to others.
It's a weak nation, like a weak person, that must
behave with bluster and boasting and rashness and
other signs of insecurity.
