The
snow is falling, seasonal music is playing in
shops throughout the Twin Cities and here at Peace
Coffee, we're gearing up for a busy few weeks. But
don't worry -- when we're not doing our regular
jobs, we all take turns bagging coffee to make
sure you get your order on time. And we don't mind
being busy, because the end result is more money to
our coffee farmer partners.
This
year, in the wake of the failed WTO and FTAA
Ministerial meetings, it's more important than ever
to show your support for Fair Trade. In this issue
of Fair Grounds, you'll find out about Global
Exchange's Fair Trade Challenge, which includes a
load of great resources. We've also got a staff
update on Melanee's trip to The Green Festival, a
Community Caravan, info on our terrific holiday
baskets, plus a new trivia question and recipe.
It's a jam-packed issue!
Speaking
of the holidays -- keep in mind that the last day
you can place orders for regular delivery to
arrive before Christmas is December 17th,
otherwise you will need to request 2 or 3 day
shipping to guarantee delivery.

Editor's
Note: In a recent letter to their members (excerpted
below), Global Exchange
issued a challenge to purchase only fair trade goods this
holiday season and beyond. Check out the following list of
resources for all your personal and gift-giving needs.
With
the holidays approaching, many of us will be buying gifts
for friends and loved ones. As people who are concerned
about people all over the world, we may find ourselves
wondering how to make sure we spend our dollars ethically,
and ensure that the gifts we give benefit those who made
them as well as those who receive them. Thankfully, lots
of great purchasing alternatives exist, such as Fair Trade
coffee and chocolate, and fairly traded goods from around
the world.
This
holiday season, Global Exchange is issuing the Fair
Trade Challenge — buy ALL of your holiday gifts
from Fair Trade sources! Read on
to find out why Fair Trade is so important, where to find
fair trade goods, and how to get involved in Fair Trade
action.

The
2nd Annual Green Festival took place Nov. 8th-9th
in San Francisco, CA. The mission of the Green
Festival, co-produced by Global Exchange and Co-op
America, is to bring together green enterprises,
environmental groups, leading thinkers on the
green economy, and thousands of attendees for a
two-day party with a very serious objective:
strengthening the locally controlled, green
economy and expanding popular support for policies
aimed at sustainability and social justice.
There
were over 300 exhibitors, ranging from Mother
Jones Magazine and Clif Bar to Roco Mojo (a
roasted soy beverage) along with numerous
non-profits from around the Bay Area and many
national organizations. Peace Coffee attended the
event to meet with like-minded fair traders and
other dynamic sustainable businesses. Thousands of
people from the Bay Area came to participate,
encouraging the movement for more green business.
Both days were charged with an energy that can
only be described as the feeling in your body
after a really great cup of Fair trade organic
coffee. Speakers like Kevin Danaher, Anita Roddick
and Angela Davis rallied the crowd with words of
wisdom and optimism, especially in regards to the
upcoming presidential elections. With the
elections in mind, the Green Festival plans to
head to Washington, D.C., in 2004. Until then, the
organizers encourage all of us to keep the
pressure on our government to implement practices
towards the democratizing and greening of our
economy. For Green Festival updates, visit www.greenfestivals.com.

Calhoun
Square’s 14th Annual Coffee Festival – For
the third year in a row, Peace Coffee participated
in the Calhoun Square Coffee Festival. The money
raised at the event benefited Aids Care Partners,
which provides HIV sensitive housing and care to
people in need. All morning long, we brewed tasty
cups of French Roast and Ethiopian Yirgacheffe. At
the end of the festival, there was a vote to
decide the Festival's Best Coffee, with 10 coffee
companies on the ballot. We thought the chances
were slim, but to our surprise, Peace Coffee took
home the title of Best Regular (non-flavored) Roast Coffee!

giving away coffee!
Think
you know a lot about coffee? Then enter our Fair
Grounds Trivia Contest. Click
here for our question of the month. Entering is easy
and it's FUN!
Our
Coffee
Quiz winner for November is Darcy Danielson
Here’s
her answer--
"Well,
you see, the nautical tale goes like this: Under
Pres. Woodrow Wilson, Josephus Daniels was
appointed Secretary of the Navy. He must have been
against alcohol aboard ship because he abolished
the officers' wine mess and allowed coffee to
reign as the strongest beverage allowable on Navy
ships. A cup of coffee then became known, perhaps
with an indignant sigh and a scowl, as a cup of
Joe.
Good
thing that Secretaries Mead, Ale and Rum prevailed
and sailors can once again tie one on and become
three sheets to the wind between the devil and the
deep blue sea!"
Congratulations
Darcy!

"It
is through strengthening this global movement for
peace and justice -- a movement never before seen
-- that we can bring about sweeping changes in who
makes decisions for our global community and in
whose interests those decisions are made."
