What’s your favorite fact about coffee?
“According to folklore an Ethiopian goatherd named Kaldi discovered the joys of coffee when his goats ate the berries and became so frisky that they danced.  Kaldi soon joined them.”  -Uncommon Grounds, The HISTORY of COFFEE and HOW it TRANSFORMED our World by Mark Pendergrast.

Tell us something no one knows about your job.
That’s a secret.

What’s your favorite pairing with coffee?
I like fresh banana chocolate chip bread, a comfy couch and two big Bernese Mountain Dogs at my feet. A newspaper’s a nice touch as well.

If you could have coffee with anyone, living or dead, who would it be?
Lauren Welker, my grandfather.  To reconnect with a dear friend, to share some fun stories about the past couple decades and to seek his guidance on farming related issues (I’m currently transitioning a 75 acre farm to organic production).  I’m also restoring his father’s 1960 Chevy Belair and would love to take him (as he would always say) on a “two bit” tour.

Where are you to be found when not at Peace Coffee?

At our farm with my son.  We like to drive tractors, tear stuff apart, push things around, get messy and try to grow stuff.  In the winter season you can find me at Hyland Hills where I’ve been a member of the National Ski Patrol for the past dozen years.

How’d you find your way to Peace Coffee?
I started as a consultant and fell in love with the people, Peace Coffee’s product and its mission to help coffee farmers improve their lot in life.

What’s your favorite fashion faux pas to commit?
Wool socks halfway rolled down with my black crocs.

If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go and why?
Wherever my children wander off to. They always seem to choose the most adventurous traveling destinations: Iceland, Senegal, New Zealand, (but count me out of) Barrow, Alaska.  My lovely bride recently started working for a global seed company so I’m hoping we can re-visit Basel, Switzerland where we lived for 3 years back in the 00’s.

What music keeps you going while at work?
Peter Ostroushko during the workday, and Brantley Gilbert after hours.
